Aker BioMarine’s Science Investments Lead to New Company Developments

Visit Booth #19049 at Vitafoods to Learn More About Aker’s New Clinical Trials & Product Formulations

Aker BioMarine Antarctic, an integrated biotechnology company dedicated to the sustainable harvest of krill and development of krill-derived biotech products, will be exhibiting at the Vitafoods show in Geneva, Switzerland, (May 6th -8th). Company representatives will be available at booth #19049 to discuss several new developments, including the results of a recent 300-subject clinical trial and new product innovations. These efforts are being driven by the additional scientists the company hired in late 2013 to help further krill research and development.

Largest Human Study on Superba(TM) Krill

A new study published in the February 2014 edition of Nutrition Research shows that krill can significantly reduce triglycerides and increase the Omega-3 Index.

Researchers divided 300 subjects into five groups, who were supplemented with Superba(TM) krill oil at either 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 grams per day or placebo (olive oil). Subjects had blood triglyceride (TG) values between 150 and 499 mg/dL. Blood lipids were measured at baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks of treatment. Overall results showed that those administered Superba(TM) Krill oil had a statistically significant 10% reduction in serum TG levels, with the group consuming the highest amount of krill increasing their Omega-3 Index by 70%. Superba(TM) Krill Product Innovations

Consumers are gravitating toward novel combinations of ingredients and new delivery forms in the omega-3 market. Looking to combine the strength of krill with these recent trends, Aker BioMarine is currently working on new ingredient formulations as well as unique delivery formats such as gummies, powders and liquids.

Accelerating Superba(TM) Krill Research

In an effort to expand upon its research commitment for krill, Aker BioMarine Antarctic hired eight new scientists in late 2013. This group brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in R&D, regulatory affairs and product development, and their mission is to help broaden the knowledge and understanding of krill, with a particular focus on clinical outcomes and new product applications.

“The krill category continues to perform very well,” said Matts Johansen, COO, Aker BioMarine Antarctic. “It is our mission to bring the most innovative products to market, but it is equally important to have research and data, which substantiate all of these efforts. Vitafoods is the perfect venue to showcase our recent accomplishments.”
